3 Things Preventing You from Growing and Scaling Your Business

 Scaling a business is the dream for many entrepreneurs. It sounds simple, but most entrepreneurs run into roadblocks they just cannot get past no matter what they do. 

If you want to scale your business, you have probably discovered it takes a lot of work, patience. and perseverance. Not only that, you can be doing all the right things, but the numbers just do not move. Why?

While there are potentially many reasons this may be happening, we will go over three of the most common ones in this post, and what you can do to get things turned around.

Mindset and Limiting Beliefs

Let me ask you, do you truly believe you can grow your business to 6, or even 7, figures? It's easy to say that you believe this, but when you dig deep, there are probably some limiting beliefs that are holding you back from your dream.

Limiting beliefs come in many forms. They could be beliefs surrounding money or self-worth, beliefs that you do not know enough, are not smart enough, or that you are unsure if you are capable of handling the kind of success you want. All of these things create self-sabotaging behaviors and actions that you may not even be aware of.

I have experienced ALL of these things. For YEARS!

It was not until I addressed these false stories I was telling myself that I was able to propel my business to where it is today. 

The fact is that if you are experiencing any limiting beliefs, it will show up in your content. The words you use and the way you deliver them will be a signal to potential clients that you may not be who they want to work with. If you use video in your marketing (and I hope you do), it will show up in your delivery and your body language. 

I highly recommend working with a coach to address mindset and limiting beliefs. However, if you are not able to work with a coach, there are a few things you can do to boost your confidence and show up in a way that allows potential clients to see how awesome you are. 

Mirror Work

Do you truly LOVE who you are? Sometimes a little self-love goes a long way. When you wake up in the morning, look yourself in the eyes in the mirror and tell yourself how much you love who you see looking back at you. Remind yourself of just how wonderful and competent you are. Tell yourself how much your clients love you and need you. Say these things out loud! I must warn you, doing this every day may bring up some emotions, but keep doing this every single day. Believing in yourself starts with YOU. YOU must believe before others will. I use this technique whenever I start doubting myself. 

Remind Yourself EVERYWHERE Just How Capable You Are

I use post-it notes. I place them everywhere - on my mirror, in my notebooks, in my planner, on my computer - wherever I will see them. These are subtle reminders of your worthiness, your capabilities, and how hard you have worked for the great things that are coming.

Make Lists

Make a list of your past accomplishments and look at them often. Listen, I know you have a lot of accomplishments under your belt. No matter how small they are, you did it. For instance, I was taking 3-4 college classes per semester WHILE I was working my way up the corporate ladder at my job. This was no small feat and I do not recommend it. It was hard. It took a LOT of discipline. It ruined some relationships along the way. But, do you know what? I would not trade it for anything. I was determined, I was focused and I did it through a LOT of hardships. It was quite an accomplishment and one of the hardest things I have done - especially since I was promoted to a manager position at my job and in an abusive relationship through several years of this accomplishment. 

If you can't think of anything that big or anything life-changing, that perfectly okay! An accomplishment can be anything from you landed a new client, you finished a class, you created an awesome piece of content. It can be ANYTHING! If you did it and you are proud of that accomplishment, use it to inspire yourself to do more. 

Write as many of your accomplishments as you can think of. And when you think you are finished, think of some more. Why? Because if you are like most people, you have accomplished way more than you give your credit for. Take credit for all those accomplishments. Look at the list often. Remind yourself that you are capable of all of those things and so much more.

No Systems and Processes

Are you running your business or is your business running you? Look, if you have a business, then you need to step into the role of a CEO and run it like one. Every business has systems and processes that allow it to run efficiently. 

Do you have a WRITTEN process for onboarding a client? How about a written process for conducting a sales call? Everything from your social media strategy, your customer service, how you work with clients, how you onboard them, and how you close sales should have written processes. This should be the standard by which you do business. 

All aspects of your business should run like a well-oiled machine. You will see just how important this is later in this post.

Trading Time for Dollars

 You may have heard this before, but I am going to say it again: You should never trade time for dollars. Doing this greatly limits your earning potential and will lead to burnout if your business keeps growing. There are only 24 hours in the day and you absolutely NEED some downtime in order to have the energy necessary to be there for your clients and to grow your business. 

My recommendation is for you to create packages. This is how your work with clients. They do not pay you by the hour, they buy a package. This allows you to work with your clients more efficiently and it also allows you to increase your income because, with packages, your clients will feel more supported and feel like they are getting more.

When you work with clients and charge an hourly rate, you have to increase your hourly rate or take on more clients to make more money. The problem with this is that your clients will have a limit to the amount they are willing to pay hourly AND you can only take on a limited number of clients because there are only 24 hours in a day. Hourly rates limit your income.

With packages, you can add more things to the package, you can bundle it into a group program as a way to take on more clients, thus increasing the limit in the number of people you can serve. You can also offer different bundles, which allows you to better serve potential clients. 

So, if you are only offering 1:1, consider changing your offers. You can still offer 1:1 plans, but reserve those for special clients who really want and need that kind of attention, and then have that reflected in the pricing for the 1:1 plan. Congratulations, you just increased your income!

Bonus: Not Hiring a Team Before You Think You Need One

 I promised you we would get back to the systems and processes. So here it is. In order to grow AND scale, you will likely need to hire a team. No successful business owner gets there by themselves. 
Most of my clients wait to hire a team. They wait until they feel like they need one. They wait until they think they have the income to hire a team. They wait until they are burnt out. Don't wait. Waiting delays your ability to increase your revenue!
If you want to grow and scale your business, the sooner you hire a team, the sooner you can focus on those actions you need to take to grow and scale. A team supports you with the mundane tasks that either are not adding to the bottom line or the things you don't like or are not your zone of genius. So, hire early and hire the right team. 
Your team needs to be onboarded and they will need to resonate with your way of doing things. They will be acting on behalf of you, so they need to buy in 100% to your values and your way of doing things. They also need systems and processes written down and in place. This allows your team to work independently and follow your system at all times. It allows you to work on the things YOU need to do to grow and scale. They will have a written online manual on how to do everything in your business. If you don't have this ahead of time, you will waste countless hours training your team. I cannot stress just how important it is to have standard operating procedures written and ready to go when you hire a team.
